The Greatest Dishonest Love Story Ever Told
When I awoke this morning, I caught a glimpse of a breaking story in the news.
As it turns out the “greatest love story ever told”, was a lie.
Herman Rosenblat admitted that he had made up the love story that was featured on Oprah, and written about in the book , Angel At The Fence.
I was disappointed. I was among the millions of Americans who sat riveted to the screen as Mr. Rosenblat described his days in a concentration camp, when he was a teenager. He stated that a 9 year old girl visited him everyday for 7 months and threw him food over the fence, keeping him alive.
The story gets even more intriguing as he tells of how miraculously they were reunited years later as adults on a blind date that friends set up after they had resettled to America.
I admit. I was totally taken in when watching the episode on Oprah. I mean, who doesn’t like a good love story? Especially one that had all the makings of a phenomenal one. Listening him to describe it all…..they would exchange adoring glances throughout the entire episode. It made you just feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
How disappointing to find out it was mostly fantasy. Although Mr. Rosenblat does say that the parts about the concentration camp are true…..the love story is not. He states,:”I wanted to bring happiness to people. I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world.”
I am sure that is the case. However, there are more honest ways to do this. To sit on the Oprah show and fabricate a tale of that caliber?? Well….it’s sad.
When every time you turn on the TV and there is nothing but negative headlines, this story did warm the hearts of so many Americans, myself included. Now, this story too has taken a negative turn. It is unfortunate and disheartening. Instead of this great love story filling me with wonder and hope, like it did when I first watched it on Oprah. This morning it just makes me feel sad that a man felt he had to totally fabricate a love story to get his message across.
